The Census has become easier to fill out. You will receive a survey in the mail in February or March of 2010. It will only be 10 questions long and should only take 10 minutes to complete. The more detailed socioeconomic information typically collected with the census will instead be collected through the annual American Community Survey given to a small percentage of the population.
If you don't fill out the form, Census employees will start going door to door May - July 2010 to collect the necessary data.

Why is the Census so important? The United States Constitution requires a national census to be completed once every 10 years in order for the entire population to be counted. This data determines how many representatives each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives. The data also helps distribute the $400 billion that is given to states each year. Boundaries for state and local legislative and congressional districts are also determined by utilizing census data. During the development of retail stores, schools, hospitals, new housing developents, and community facilities, decision makers look at census data to determine locations.
