Public Works Department Responsibilities

2009 Street Projects

Typically, every year the City allows for some street construction and/or repair in the annual budget.   Street projects for 2009 have not been scheduled.

Recycling -Curbside

  • Recycling is collected every week on a rotating basis.  The City is divided in half into gold and green sections.  The "green" side of town consists of all residents ON and WEST of John Paul Road and all residents ON and NORTH of Madison Avenue.  The "gold" side of town consists of all residents EAST of John Paul Road and all residents SOUTH of Madison Avenue.  Click here for a map.

Brush and Trees Curbside Pick-up

  • January 1, 2009 - January 31, 2009
  • March 9, 2009 - April 26, 2009
  • July 5, 2009 - July 26, 2009
  • September 1, 2009 - September 30, 2009
  • Holiday tree collecion falls under the same restrictions as brush and trees.

Bulky Trash & Appliance Curbside Pick-up

  • Collection will be completed the 1st collection day of each month. 

Yard Waste Collection (Spring)

  • March 7, 2009- April 26, 2009

Curbside Collection of Leaves (Fall)

  • October 10 2009 - November 22, 2009
  • Curbside collection for LEAVES ONLY will occur in the fall.  Grass clippings, twigs, brush, garden waste or pumpkins will NOT be picked up with this collection. 
  • Please rake the leaves into the curb area of the street.

Drop-Off Site

Compost and Yard Waste Drop-Off at the Public Works Department-NO BRUSH

  • April 27, 2009 - November 20, 2009
  • Compost and yard waste may be brought to the Department of Public Works Garage at 620 W. Madison Ave.

Lawn Mowing

  • Grass clippings are not allowed in the street.
  • It is the duty of every property owner to mow all grasses or weeds exceeding one foot in height--Per City ordinance.
  • Any weeds or grasses not mowed by the property owner, and after you receive a notice from the Weed Commissioner, will be mowed by City employees.
  • Once notified, the property owner has 5 days to correct the violation.
  • Only 1 notice of violation will be sent to owner per year.
  • The property owner will be billed a minimum charge of $100 per hour/and or $100 minimum per lot.

Sidewalks

  • Sidewalks must be kept clear of snow, ice, overhanging trees/branches and other hazardous materials.
  • Newly fallen snow must be shoveled and cleared promptly by tenant or owner of property.
  • Any ice or snow not cleared off public sidewalk within 24 hours will be cleared by City employees and the property owner will be billed a minimum of $100.00 or removal.
  • Owners of corner lots are also expected to shovel snow from the sidewalks leading to street crosswalks.

Snow Emergencies and Snow Plowing

  • No person shall park or leave any vehicle on any street or municipal parking lot in the City after a snowfall of 1.5 inches or more until after the snow from the street or lot has been removed or plowed to the curb line.
  • DO NOT blow or plow snow onto City streets from the sidewalks, terraces, private driveways and parking lots.

Stray Animals

Dogs thatare picked up as stray animals are kept at the Public Works Garage, weather permitting.  In order to retrieve your dog, you must pay a fine of $35 to Milton City Hall and either license your dog or show proof of license.  Proof of rabies is required to license your dog in the City of Milton.

Dogs and cats that are picked up by the City can be returned to the owner promptly if the owner has a City of Milton issued animal license on the collar of the dog/cat.  It is a City Ordinance that you must have your dogs and cats licensed in the City of Milton.
